Malaysian Food - Khaaw Pad American

Khaaw Pad American or Khao Pad American is also known as "American Fried Rice." If you know this by the name of American Fried Rice, you must be thinking that its an American dish that is popular among Malay people. But in fact it is a dish that is prepared by Thai/Malay chefs and has a historical background. During the Vietnam War, Thai cooks prepared this dish to serve the US militants. Thai cooks wanted to cook something that they would like to eat during the breaks.

The dish has American as well as Thai ingredients. American food items such as fried chicken, ham, hot dogs, raisins, ketchup, and croutons are cooked with Malay/Thai rice. Addition of pineapple is optional. In a menu of Thai restaurants in USA, American Fried Rice are included now. The name implies that most of the ingredients included in this dish are American or at least have a western origin.

Pan Fried Chicken

There are variations of this dish such as Nasi Goreng USA, is made with many of the same ingredients excluding pork as pork is not halal and is not used in Muslim countries like Malaysia. Customers are also given choice of having chili sauce or ketchup with this rice dish.

Cook the rice first and don't make them dried out. It is best to prepare them and covered overnight in a fridge. Cook the rice with a little less water than normal and let the air pass through the rice for 10 minutes. Fry an egg in 3-4 table spoon oil on a high heat. The prepared eggs should be brown and crunchy. Take them out when they are brown in color. Now cut the hot dogs in an X pattern as it will make them crispier when you fry them. Fry them until they get crispy. Then put them aside with the fried eggs and dump the remaining used oil. After eggs, rice and hotdogs; comes the turn of onions. Put 1 teaspoon of fresh oil in a frying pan and heat it on a medium flame. Fry onion on this medium flame until they become translucent and then add butter in it. Throw the rice in the pan when the butter starts melting. Stir all the ingredients for 2 minutes. Then add ketchup, soya sauce and raisins. Stir well and cook for 2 minutes. Serve them with hot dogs and egg on the top.

Fried rice is the most easy and simple dish that can be prepared in no time. People love to cook it as it takes minimum amount of time and effort. Everyone love to prepare rice in their own way so it is always good to keep experimenting with the ingredients and coming up with a new taste.
